Ice fishing tips tuning up the ice auger

Well fellow anglers winter is on its way and the good ole sport of ice fishing is brewing in hearts
of ice anglers across Canada USA and the world!.
Here's a few tips to make the hard water season go smoothly,
Thinking in advance can be a good thing when it comes icefishing because it will save you time
money and frustration.
Testing and maintaining the Ice auger before the trip i have to say is a common
over looked thing.. Giving the old jiffy ice auger a new spark plug once and while
doesn't hurt either and it will make the trips go allot better!!.
Another common problem is the diaphragm in the carburetors on ice augers they seem to harden up as they sit over the summer months.
Making starting the auger nearly impossible till it gets warmed up and worked in a bit.
How to prevent this is to start your auger a few times during the summer months ..
The neighbours that see will say "look at that hardcore ice angler hes having withdrawals from ice fishing poor fellow".
That's when you walk over to their yard and drill a few test holes in the nosey neighbours front lawn with a smile .. HA!OK back to subject.Cleaning the carb on the auger can be tricky so If your not familiar with the mechanics of the auger its best to leave it alone and take it to a certified service repair dept that specializes in them ect..tune ups cost about 20.00-40.00 bucks cheap...Maybe the most important thing in keeping the auger running smoothly is properly mixed fuel another key thing!

Last but not least.

I always flush the tank out at the end of the ice season if you want to get down dirty..

Other than that your ice auger should work fine!!

Spearfishing decoys what are they?

Spearfishing decoys are made of wood generally, hand painted with metal fins painted tack or glass eyes and are designed to swim like a injured bait fish when jigged.

The decoys are used in the winter through the ice.

Muskie and pike are the fish that will mostly likely be attracted to decoys most of the time.

This old folk art tradition has been around for years and years.

Some of the vintage ice decoys are worth quite abit of money for a original.

The founders of this Art form should be more recognized for their craftsmanship and very

interesting art form in my opinion.. Most of them even forged their own fish spears.

Spearing fish in the winter was a way of putting supper on the table for many spear fishermen

so their decoys must work or no one would eat.

I think its illegal to use decoys in Canada i dont really know why, considering there is no

hooks on the decoys. All they do is attract the fish in.. Ok back to the subject.

Some decoys are very unique and worth hundreds of dollars and in my oppinion should be worth

more. ..Some decoy carvers back in the day made so many decoys they would trade or barter

with them amongest the other spear anglers.

This is a labour of love which can be frustrating rewarding all at the same time is a growing hobbie.

From huge muskie that lurked around them, to the long fought out battles with fish by a raging rivers edge. To be reliable enough to counted on to feed a whole family when in need is impressive to me.. Not just that Imagine being so needed your silently slipped into the pocket of your closest fishing pals shirt quickly with a smile. that Makes me laugh but happens often.
I think maybe that's why serious anglers have a relationship with their lures.
Is a tackle box just a box full of old rusted worn out metal and wooden lures? As some would like to call em?
I THINK NOT!!
Lures are like windows to past memories in a anglers mind..
they are sealed for a time then opened shared but never forgotten.
The rare grandfather lures as i like to call them are my favorites.
Aged by time and chiseled with character, the battle scars of wars waged on them are proof of their value and rank in the tackle box.
So please if you have some older lures treat them kind they could be older than your great grandfathers fathers ..

What i do not like is people who think just because a lure has a bit of wear or a few marks on it

its worth half as much!..

I would rather have a real old warrior over a FAKE remake any day :)

I can go on and on all day about fishing its simply what i know and what i do best.

So here we go when selecting lures for pike i generally always pick the classics

like the Len Thompson spoons.

When buying them dont buy the cheap knock offs or the look a likes

they just dont compare. They will just rust fast and reck what ever other lures that are i
n the same area and the paint seems to chip off to easy after catching a fish.

The fakes dont cast half as good, they are lighter and the hooks break off .

Imagine losing a trophy fish of a life time cause your to cheap to spend a few more

dimes on a real solid well made lure! That just doesnt make sense at all..

I have landed many toothy critters on these classics spoons and my spoons are all

marked up to prove it. NOT that i have to or anything..

Its a never fail choice when fishing for pike here in CANADA!

3. Jigs tails rubber bodies colors i prefer the yellows or the perch colored ones.

5. A big live minnow suspended a few feet below a bobber in a shallow weedy bay will

produce a trophy Pike in no time garenteed!

But check your regs on this one in your area if this is allowed in your lake..
